It’s the must-stop for every Laurentian chalet-goer. S. Bourassa in Les Factoreries Vallée Saint-Sauveur offers a grocery experience so unique that our family, even without the prerequisite chalet, still drives up north for a bit of shopping. Why you say?
Imagine a grocery with steel shelves, Costco-style, groaning under a dizzying array of products both gourmet and basic. Here, olive oil comes in dainty bottles or oversized tin canisters, chunk tuna is sold in 1 kg cans, and locally-made onion confit dares you to buy in big jars.
During summer, the produce section would make any open-air market jealous with crates full of the usual suspects (tomatoes, beans, broccoli, etc.) but also many surprising fruits and vegetables: chanterelle mushrooms, edible flowers, Brussels sprout “trees”, Vidalia onions…
Still, for this foodie, the best part has to be the walk-in refrigerated room at the back. With coats hanging by the swinging doors should you feel nippy—and chances are you will—, this room beckons like Ali Baba’s cavern. Calling on your greediness, a treasure trove of 1001 imported and Québec cheeses, dozens of spicy sausages, plus freezers brimming with frozen croissants, chocolatines, foot-long strudels, decadent cookies, and gourmet pizzas in mostly-local brand names you’ve never seen before.
In season, you may even find errant baskets of oysters and air-packed filet mignons, although S. Bourassa does not have an official fish-and-meat section.
Of course, with so many neighbouring factory outlets the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Guess and Atmosphere, you may want to hold off food shopping until you are done bargain hunting for the best in weekend wear…
Word to the wise
S. Bourassa Saint-Sauveur is located at 105-B Guindon Street in Saint-Sauveur, Québec (J0R 1R6 for the GPS-enabled). The phone number is 450.227.4737. There are other Bourassa stores but Saint-Sauveur is far enough, and quaint enough, for our family. The store does not accept credit cards, so bring your money or your debit card. Do I need to warn: eat ahead or it will cost you.
